Chelsea Injury News And Return Dates Ahead Of Liverpool Clash
Timo Werner has eased any fears that he might miss the Liverpool game this weekend.
At full-time, the 24-year-old was seen with an ice pack strapped to his right leg, sparking some concern whether he had picked up an injury issue.
When asked how he picked up the knock, Werner said to Sky Sports: “Yeah, it was from the penalty. The knee of the goalkeeper hit me directly in the muscle and it went very hard.
“For the rest of the game, it hurt a lot and I couldn’t do some movements because the muscle went very hard, but in the end, I’m happy that we won.
“I don’t care about this. We played a good game today, we did well. I’m happy that I got the penalty because I think it’s very important for our game.
“We can do much better than we did today, but we won the game. A lot of players in our team haven’t played any games this season. So, we’re maybe not in the strength that we can be.
“In the next few weeks, we will get very fit and confident when we win more games like this today.”
Werner was then asked whether he reckons he would be fit to face Liverpool next week.
He said: “Of course. In games like this, you’re always fit.”
The new signing arrived to the club with a heel injury that he was carrying over from the end of the 2019/20 season with Leicester City.
The 23-year-old has been doing some individual training at Cobham in order to be fit and to make his debut for the club.
However, the England international missed the game at the AMEX Stadium, and it remains to be seen if he will feature against Liverpool.
The 27-year-old picked up a knee injury in a pre-season clash against Brighton and missed the Premier League game as a result.
Speaking before Chelsea’s trip to the Amex Stadium, Lampard said: “Hakim Ziyech took an injury to a knee against Brighton [in a pre-season match] so won’t be fit.
“We hope it’s a matter of weeks, a couple of weeks but we have to see.”
Lampard’s admission indicates that Ziyech will struggle to make it for this weekend against Liverpool.
Lampard had said that the winger was in contention to play at Brighton, but the USA international was subsequently left out of the squad.
And the Blues boss said after the game that Pulisic had received a setback in his recovery, and he could face a race to be fit for the weekend’s game.
“Christian was training with us last week but he had a bit of discomfort a couple of days ago when he was trying to be in contention for today.
“It would have been a big ask for today and he has had to take a few steps back and we will have to see.”
The Brazilian is still waiting for his debut after missing the trip to Brighton.
Speaking before the game, Lampard said: “Thiago Silva is now in London but not training with us until the weekend, so I doubt very much he will be in contention for the Brighton game.”
The former PSG centre-back is now in training with the rest of the squad, so he could be fit to make the squad this weekend.
