Chelsea must consider Zouma for key role amid transfer ban

These are tough times at Chelsea FC with regards to our present inability to sign players and shore up some positions on the pitch ahead of the 2019/20 football season.

Meanwhile, Frank Lampard is yet to be announced as Chelsea boss and this is another cause for worry as such deals should be done and dusted by now so he can assess his squad and see who fits into his plan and vice versa. The earlier the better.

In light of this, there is one young player at Chelsea who should be given a chance to carve a niche for himself at Stamford Bridge after impressing elsewhere. This is definitely his time to shine at Chelsea.

French defender Kurt Zouma spent last season on loan to Everton where he impressed considerably and established himself as a mainstay at Goodison Park.

He’ll be returning to Chelsea with a wealth of experience alongside the little he garnered whilst at Stamford Bridge and this definitely qualifies him for a place in the squad to play a significant role under the incoming manager.

Kurt Zouma, 24, is one of the assets the club can utilize in light of the transfer ban, although he has spent the last two football seasons on loan away from Stamford Bridge.

It can be recalled that Kurt Zouma was fast becoming a mainstay in the Chelsea team under Antonio Conte before rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament in a game against Manchester United in 2016. This injury kept him on the sidelines for six months, causing him to lose his place in the Chelsea squad.

Regardless, Chelsea tied him down with a six-year deal in 2017 where he spent the season on loan to Stoke City. His efforts were not enough to prevent the Potters from being relegated. When Maurizio Sarri arrived last summer, Zouma was again sent out on his latest loan spell to Everton in a new-look defence under Marco Silva.

The Frenchman was impressive for the Toffees and the Merseyside outfit now want him on a permanent basis according to BBC Sport. This could turn out sour for the Blues if such a deal is approved based on the quality of the player.

Chelsea currently has Andreas Christensen, Antonio Rudiger, and an error-prone David Luiz as the only traditional senior center-backs at the club. Therefore, a player of Zouma’s quality is definitely an advantage for the team. Remember, the Blues can’t make any signings yet.

Kurt Zouma has excellent aerial awareness, has the physique to intimidate the opposition (not sure if this is still a valid criterion in the Premier League, but will definitely count for something). He has the ability to make timely and accurate tackles and interceptions.

His positioning and awareness are not yet top notch, but other defenders at the club haven’t covered themselves in glory either in this regard. This is one area where the incoming manager must improve on.

Kurt Zouma also has an eye for long passes and this is a plus to his game. This is also one area where David Luiz is exceptional.

Kurt Zouma has close to 150 Premier League appearances to his name as a center-back. The player has the quality to thrive at Chelsea but this will depend on the preference of the incoming manager.

Regardless, it won’t do Chelsea any good to let Zouma leave on any kind of deal and he won’t be ideal on the bench either. The incoming manager must utilize his defensive abilities and allow him to shine.
