The Blues continue to be linked with a big-money move for Bayer Leverkusen star Kai Havertz, with negotiations between the two clubs continuing to rumble on.
But it is in a defensive sense where Frank Lampard, the Chelsea head coach, needs to add to most, you could argue. A goalkeeper, center-back, and left-back are believed to be high up on the Chelsea boss’ wishlist.
FRANK LAMPARD ON IMPACT OF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE ON TRANSFERS
And it is understood that Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak is one of the top targets that Chelsea are looking at, as they look to replace the under-performing Kepa Arrizabalaga, who was left on the bench for last weekend’s FA Cup final defeat to Arsenal.
With that in mind, here is a round-up of all the very latest news concerning Chelsea’s pursuit of the Slovenian international and everything we know so far.
Chelsea make Oblak top transfer priority
The Blues have identified Oblak as their top transfer target ahead of the summer window officially opening for business later this month, the Mirror reports.
After signing a new deal at the Wanda Metropolitano last year, a £120million buy-out clause was inserted in the goalkeeper’s contract. However, Chelsea is prepared to go in with an offer of less than £100million and offer Arrizabalaga to sweeten the deal.
Atletico does not want to sell the Slovenian No.1, but they may be forced to because of the financial impact the coronavirus pandemic has brought.
Simeone comments on Oblak interest
Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone has addressed the reports linking Oblak with a summer switch to Stamford Bridge.
The Argentine, who has been in charge of Atletico since 2011, addressed the media ahead of his side’s clash with Getafe on Thursday and he commented on the claims linking Oblak with an exit from the Spanish capital this summer.
Simeone said: “It is normal that they want a goalkeeper of the characteristics and value that Oblak has and it doesn’t surprise me because he is very good.
“For us, he is decisive, very important in the dressing room, he is our captain.
“Year after year he has managed to evolve in all the matches, from goalkeeper to his handling with the group, and hopefully he can continue with us.
“It is normal to always look for the best, and we have many who are very good, some previous seasons have left, others have stayed, and it is logical and normal for a footballer like Oblak to be loved by anyone.
“For us, he is our captain, an important player year after year and hopefully we can continue to count on his work, which is enormous for Atlético de Madrid.”
While a couple of Lampard’s current first-team squad such as Michy Batshuayi and Emerson Palmieri could be on the move over the coming months, here we take a look at some forgotten players who the Blues need to part with.
Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia could be very busy in the next few months.
Blues learn Oblak fee and plot way they can fund it
If Chelsea is to ensure Oblak is standing between the sticks at Stamford Bridge as their first-choice goalkeeper next summer then they are going to need a hefty-sized checkbook.
The Slovenian international has a buyout clause of €120million in his Atletico contract, meaning any move for the goalkeeper will not come so easily.
But the Blues could be able to fund a deal by offloading Kepa Arrizabalaga this summer, with Valencia, according to a report by Goal, keen on landing the Spain international.
Valencia are aiming to offload goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen this summer, meaning Arrizabalaga could become their priority target, which in turn could enable the Blues to fund a move for Oblak.
Manchester United join Oblak chase
Chelsea has been joined by Premier League rivals Manchester United in the race to sign Atletico Madrid shot-stopper Oblak, a report by talkSPORT claims.
The Slovenian international is being heavily linked with a move to Stamford Bridge ahead of the start of the 2020/21 season, with the Blues looking to upgrade their goalkeeping options.
But with United ‘keeper David De Gea has been guilty of committing some costly errors of late, Ole Gunnar Solskjeaer – the United boss – is keeping his options open, with United now being linked with a move for Oblak.
The release clause in Oblak’s contract is £110million, but Atletico could be willing to accept a lower off because of the financial impact the coronavirus pandemic has had on the club, meaning both Chelsea and Manchester United could be even more tempted to launch a summer move for the Slovenian.
Blues open Oblak talks
Granovskaia – Chelsea’s transfer guru – has opened talks with Atletico Madrid about a summer move for Oblak, a report by the Daily Star claims.
Blues chief Lampard has highlighted Oblak as his No.1 target to replace Arrizabalaga between the sticks this summer, with the Atletico star considered as one of the best goalkeepers in world football.
Spanish giants not worried by Oblak interest
Atletico Madrid is not too concerned about the prospect of Oblak sealing a summer move to Stamford Bridge, Christian Falk, the head of football, at German publication Sport BILD claims.
It is reported that Chelsea has held an interest in landing the Slovenian international for more than two months.
However, Atletico is not too concerned about Chelsea’s interest, as they believe the London club will be unable to fund deals for both Oblak and Havertz, meaning they are not worried about the prospect of losing their star goalkeeper this summer.
Hakim Ziyech key to an alternative target
Although Oblak remains Chelsea’s number one goalkeeping target this summer, they are also said to be taking a look at other options should they not be able to persuade Atletico to part with the player.
According to the Athletic, One of the options is Ajax goalkeeper Andre Onana, and Chelsea’s first signing of the summer could play a key role should they decide to make a move for him.
Ziyech will provide a scouting report on his former teammate with the players having played together at Ajax.
Onana is said to be available for a fee of around £30million.
Blues end Oblak interest
Chelsea has ended their interest in landing Atletico goalkeeper Oblak this summer, a report by TEAMtalk claims.
With a move for the Slovenian international predicted to cost more than £100million, the Blues are now looking at a cheaper alternative in the shape of Burnley and England goalkeeper Nick Pope.
The former Charlton Athletic man has been heavily linked with some of Britain’s biggest clubs in recent months, with the Clarets goalkeeper now being tipped to seal a £50million move to Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea make a key decision in Oblak hunt
According to a report by Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea has identified a list of just two goalkeepers in their quest to replace Kepa this summer.
The Blues have been heavily linked with both Oblak of Atletico Madrid and Ajax shot-stopper Onana in recent months.
Now, according to the latest reports, it is claimed that Chelsea will only swoop for either Oblak or Onana this summer.
But Onana could be preferred if a deal for Havertz is concluded, presumably because Onana would be a cheaper option than Oblak.
Romano, as quoted by the Express, told The Beautiful Game Podcast: “They have a list, they have a list for the goalkeeper.
“They have to consider if they are going to sign Havertz, they can spend money for too many players like they did for [Hakim] Ziyech, they did for [Timo] Werner and they hope to do for Havertz.
“If they sign Havertz, they have a list and they will consider [Andre] Onana for sure.”
