Russia 2018 – How Chelsea players have fared

The Russia 2018 world cup enters into the third round of matches at the group stage today, and players for various clubs have impressed significantly for their national teams. Some Chelsea players who are representing their national teams have also played key roles in the progress of their sides thus far, some good, and some, outrightly bad.

Chelsea’s attackers have been having a decent tournament thus far, same can also be said for some defenders, as well as the first choice goalkeeper at Stamford Bridge, Thibaut Courtois. However, the second choice goalie at the club, Willy Caballero has failed to make a mark for his Argentina side as they are on the brink of elimination.

The like of Eden Hazard, Michy Batshuayi, and Thibaut Courtois who are Chelsea’s players in the Belgium team appear to have lived up to the billing. Chelsea’s star man Hazard has played a key role for his side, scoring twice and providing one assist, with Batshuayi also finding the back of the net after coming on as a sub. They’ve booked a place in the next stage of the competition but will have to slug it out with England to determine the winner of the group.

Willian has played his part for Brazil and has started the two games thus far. Brazil have a make or mar encounter against Serbia to determine their qualification.

Andreas Christensen has been a huge presence in the back for Denmark in the competition and has started both games. They are yet to seal a place in the next stage, and their status will be determined in their next game.

Caballero appears to be having a mare with the Argentina side as he made some howlers that resulted in a 3 nil defeat to Croatia. Argentina are yet to win a game in the competition, even with the mercurial Messi and have a decider against Nigeria on Tuesday.

Azpilicueta is yet to kick a ball for Spain. Antonio Rudiger played his part when called on in defense for Germany as they survived an elimination scare after going down to 10 men against Sweden, Toni Kroos provided the goods, and hopefully, we hope to see Rudiger continue in the lineup for Joachim Lowe’s side.

Victor Moses and Omeruo have been decent for the Nigerian Super Eagles thus far and will hope to secure a place in the next stage with a win or draw against Argentina. A very tough game for Nigeria on the cards. Moses has provided 1 assist in the tournament.

Not a good time for Chelsea’s veteran defenders in Russia 2018 as Gary Cahill is yet to play for the Three Lions in the competition. Loftus-Cheek has been decent since he was given a chance and has been instrumental for the English side.

N’golo Kante has been massive in midfield for France, starting all games thus far, and putting in excellent performances that have even made Pogba suggest that the combative midfielder has 15 lungs. Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud has also played his part for the French side and has made 1 start and 1 sub appearance.

Hopefully, the teams parading Chelsea players go far in the competition with one ending up winning the tournament.
