Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri has revealed why England midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek didn’t play any part for Chelsea in the Premier League game against Southampton.
The player was not in the matchday squad and Sarri has disclosed that this was because the player was involved in Europa League action for 70 minutes.
It can be recalled that Loftus-Cheek made his first start in a competitive game for Chelsea since 2017 in the Europa League game against Videoton.
He was in line for action against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup at Anfield but picked up an injury which kept him out of the game till the Europa League encounter.
Most would have expected the England man to feature for the Blues away to Southampton at the St Mary’s, but Sarri had other ideas.
When asked if the England midfielder was injured, Sarri replied:
“No, not at the moment,”
“I preferred for him after 70 minutes in the last match for the first time in the season, I preferred for him to have training.”
Ross Barkley got the nod instead and impressed by providing an assist and scoring a goal in the game.
